Pricing and Grading Policy

How we price singles, graded cards, sealed product and retro games, and how we grade the condition of what we sell.

Applies to: All staff who price, grade or label stock, and customers who want to know how we set prices.

1. Purpose

Collectable prices move quickly. We want prices to be fair, consistent and honest, and we want customers to know what condition they are buying. This policy sets out how we do that.

2. How we price

We use UK sources first: recent UK sales and UK retailer and marketplace prices. We use overseas prices only as a guide, and convert them with care. We then adjust for condition, completeness and demand.

Pricing by product type
ProductHow we price it
Single cardsUK market price for the card, set and condition. Adjusted for demand and stock levels.
Graded cardsBy grading company and grade, using recent UK sales of the same card, grade and company.
Sealed productRRP or current UK market price for the product. Drops follow POL-08.
Retro games and consolesRecent UK sales, adjusted for condition, completeness and whether tested.

3. Condition grading for raw cards

Staff grade raw (ungraded) cards using the scale below, in good light and with the card out of its sleeve. Our grading is our own opinion and may differ from a grading company's.

Raw card condition scale
GradeDescription
Near MintLooks new or close to it. At most a tiny sign of handling on edges or surface.
Lightly PlayedMinor wear such as light edge whitening or a few small surface marks. No creases.
Moderately PlayedNoticeable wear: edge whitening, surface scratches or light scuffing. No major damage.
Heavily PlayedHeavy wear, with creasing, bends, or major edge or surface wear. Still whole.
DamagedTears, water damage, heavy creases, writing or other serious faults.

If a card sits between two grades, we use the lower one.

4. Retro games and consoles

Retro condition terms
TermMeaning
BoxedComes with its original box. Contents may not be complete. We state what is missing.
Complete in boxGame, box, manual and any inserts that originally came with it.
LooseThe game or console only, with no box or manual.

We test items where we can and say if an item is untested. Condition notes on labels, cases and discs are shown in the description.

5. Graded slabs

Graded cards are priced by the grading company and the grade shown on the slab, because the market treats each differently. We check the slab, label and certificate number for signs of tampering before purchase and before sale. The grade is the grading company's opinion, not ours.

6. Price changes and reviews

We review prices regularly, with high-demand items checked more often. Prices can go up or down. Staff must not change a price on the till or in GG Vault without a reason, and they record the reason where required. Trade-in prices follow the Trade-in and Buying Policy (POL-09).

7. The price shown is the price

The price on the item, shelf, website or GG Vault listing is the price you pay, including VAT. We do not haggle on marked prices, but staff can offer a member offer or agreed deal. If we find a pricing error we correct it. In store, if a price was clearly wrong, we explain and offer the correct price. For online errors, see POL-13.

8. Roles and responsibilities

The Managing Director, Richard Allison, owns pricing and decides on any exception. The person in charge of the shift settles pricing questions on the shop floor. All staff must grade honestly, as described, and must not inflate a grade to make a sale.
